IEEE Xplore

The IEEE is the world’s largest professional association “advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity”. IEEE is a non-profit organization, and a leading authority on such areas as aerospace systems, computing, telecommunications, biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics to name a few.
The IEEE supplies its members with technical and professional information, resources and services. The IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities provide informational resources that inspire its members to create innovative solutions to build a better future.
For over two years I have been working closely with the IEEE to provide a redesign of their search engine, IEEE Xplore, which incorporates innovative features to enhance the user experience and assist in online project collaborations.
IEEE Xplore is a digital library providing full text access to the world’s highest quality technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics. IEEE Xplore contains over 1.8 million full text documents from IEEE journals, transactions, magazines, letters, conference proceedings, standards, and IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) publications.
The goals of this project are to:
- Create a workspace for engineers
- Develop a contemporary user interface design
- Provide tools for unified and seamless personalization
- Enable Web 2.0 functionality
To ensure that IEEE Xplore provides its members with the most intuitive and functional tools to access the IEEE digital library, numerous interviews and individual usability tests were conducted. The feedback from community representatives has been integral to the IEEE Xplore redesign, with the launch of Xplore 3.0 scheduled for early 2010.
